WHY MORPHO?

Any of the numerous, enormous, tropical American butterfly species known as morpho (family Morphidae) have brilliant, iridescent wings that typically have a distinct blue region.

The eyes of butterflies are complex.

They have up to 17,000 small eyes instead of our single large eye, each of which includes a lens, a single rod, and up to three cones.

Butterflies have photoreceptors for up to nine hues, including ultraviolet, whereas humans only have cones (photo-receptors) for three colors.
